What do I need to open an account?
To open an account with MCCU, you will need to visit one of our locations and bring a valid ID with a current address. If you are in the process of transitioning to a new address, you can bring a utility bill from your new address or go to the Secretary of State to have your address updated. Keep in mind that P.O. Boxes are not considered a valid physical address. You will also need a $5.00 deposit (this is your buy-in to the credit union cooperative!) to open your savings account.
If you choose to open your MCCU account online, there are multiple options for funding your new account. If you are unable or choose not to fund your account with a debit/credit card, you can choose to bring in cash for your first deposit.
What do I need to open a youth account?
Our youth accounts are very popular! To open a youth account with MCCU, you will need to bring in the child’s social security card. If the youth is between the ages of 16-18, we will need to see a current form of photo ID (school ID, driver’s license, State issued ID). A legal guardian will need to be joint on the account until the minor turns 18.
How do I change my address on my account?
You can change your address a couple of different ways. You can do this through our online banking system or by submitting an address update form. Through online banking, after you've logged in, hover over the ‘Info Center’ tab—this will bring up two columns. Click on ‘Personal Information’ in the ‘My Information’ column and follow the prompts to change your address. If you do not currently utilize online banking, you can use our secure online form to do so or give us a call and we will take care of it!

When your account has been dormant for three years, MCCU is required to escheat all dormant funds to the State of Michigan (or the state in which you reside). To avoid having your account go dormant you will need to show some type activity on your account, which can be something as simple as transferring a penny between accounts.
Do I need a beneficiary on my account?
While it is not required, we recommend that all members have a designated beneficiary on their account. Can I get overdraft protection?
You sure can! MCCU currently offers three types of account protection (savings account, CheckGuard, and an Overdraft Protection Loan). One way to protect yourself from overdrawing your account is to set up your savings as a back-up. This enables you to use your own money to make sure your transactions are covered. This is a no-fee solution that we are happy to be able to offer our members! Another way to protect yourself is to enroll in our CheckGuard overdraft protection service. This service ensures any transactions or payments you have scheduled will be honored (up to $500) even if you don’t have the funds available in your account. If you do not elect to utilize this service, any transaction that hits your account will be rejected if there are no funds available. We also offer an Overdraft Protection Loan, a "safety net" line of credit that is there when you need it! Our Overdraft protection is a service we are glad to offer our members, but isn’t always the right fit for everyone as there is $30 fee associated with each transaction that overdrafts the account. If you’d like to speak with an MCCU representative about these options and find the best fit for you, contact us!

Is it a good idea to cosign a loan?
Cosigners lend their names and good credit histories to the person getting the loan. Should this person lose their job, pass away, or otherwise fail to make payments, all responsibility for meeting the terms of the loan would transfer to you, the cosigner. An often-overlooked aspect of cosigning a loan is the fact that the loan will appear on both the person getting the loan and the cosigner's credit reports.

General Product and Service Questions
How are credit unions different from banks?
Credit unions are non-profit and exist to help people, not to make a profit. As such, all earnings are returned to their members in the form of high-interest savings and low rate loans. A volunteer board of directors, elected by the members, governs a credit union. With their vote, each member has a direct impact on the direction of the credit union. Also, "people helping people" is the credit union philosophy. A credit union's goal is to serve all of their members equally and provide charitable contributions to their community. Credit unions are owned by their members and each member gets one vote and an equal say in how the credit union is run.
